Serious question.

Is this the breakfast of kings?

It is a serious question! I had it this morning and I haven't eaten so well since yesterday at Blah Blah Blah on Goldhawk Road. I wish I had taken my camera with me- Mitch and I had the best meal I've eaten since the week before in Zippy's cafe a few doors down. Who knew of the culinary delights that awaited me in Shepherd's Bush?

So back to the question- breakfast of kings, aye or naw? If naw, I need an alternative. The closest I can think of is porridge with Nutella. I call it the Auld Alliance breakfast du jour.

Jings, that looks good. Can't do it anymore, what with various ailments. Can't do your brilliant Auld Alliance breakfast, either, though it sounds great. Apparently in older Scots usage porridge is, or are, plural. James Murray, the autodidact founding editor of the Oxford English Dictionary used to say 'These porridge are wersh' if his bowl of oaten goodness was insipid.

Sorry to hear you can't have either- if it helps the meal is entirely vegetarian and grilled, with the exception of the mushrooms which were fried in a little butter. The Auld Alliance breakfast is so good. I find porridge is one of the best breakfasts around for those short on time and empty of stomach- keeps you good for most of the day and has a degree of healthiness, as long as you go easy on the salt or sugar. The best oats I ever had was in a wee thatched old croft out by Forfar as a lad on a school trip- they'd been freshly milled and baked into oatcakes. I can taste them now. Have you ever had skirlie? I've not but I'm trying to think of a vegetarian version I could make. Any suggestions?

Re: porridge - put raisins and cinnamon and a teeny bit of brown sugar in it for a somehow christmassy breakky.

Re: preferences - hands up who loves Niall even when he whips them at scrabble *raises hand* Smee has TWO hands up! She can't play scrabble but she can say "stinky poop" to jakeys in bus stops...

Hmm, I think raisins are the devil's work, but I like the cinnamon and brown sugar idea! Oh and thanks for the love.

Raisins aren't evil. Time makes fools of us (grapes) all. They are a warning against tanning beds too!

Mmm, delicious! The Auld Alliance sound great, but is- alas- inaccurate, as Nutella is in fact Italian in origin. Sorry, amico mio, but what you have been referring to as the Auld Alliance is in fact another delicious example of cooperation between Scotland and Italy.

As my friend Fabrizio would say (if Elnie reads this, I hope she snorts milk) 'buon appetito!'

But it is made in FRANCE! I checked the label before posting you see. I don't pay any heed to history. Oh wait...

Made in France, sure mon petit chou chou, but I think any Italian worth their salt would be pretty cheesed off about that. Oh well, they will have to take it up with you. I have done MY bit
